MABE supports the National Council of La Raza ‘s recommendation of considering the contributions of second-language-acquisition experts by presenting Mariela's research to you and therefore possibly affecting policy to improve quality and ensure access to early learning experiences of young dual language learners. (NCLR 2011)  

Research has helped us understand how oral language skills strongly contribute to listening and reading comprehension in literacy development.  How can research change practice?  How can we change how teachers interact with young dual language learners?  How can we change how others view second language development?

Mariela will present her current research for supporting dual language development. She will teach us how to implement the READ ALOUD strategy to enhance oral language and vocabulary development both at home and in school.

Description:

This session will focus on enhancing oral language and vocabulary development for Pre-K to Grade 3 bilingual students.  Research on the language development of dual language learners will be presented. Teachers will be able to learn and practice how to evaluate children’s literature, select words and definitions, and implement instructional activities for vocabulary review and reinforcement.  The presenter will review research evidence supporting these instructional approaches and will use sample texts to provide teachers with practical ways to build oral language skills in their classrooms.

Participants: This program is appropriate for teachers and parents of dual language learners in Preschool to Grade 3.  Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance for 2.5 hours of professional development.
